Château des Eyrins Margaux 2023
A classic Left Bank red with remarkable pedigree, Château des Eyrins Margaux 2023 hails from a tiny jewel of an estate tucked among the appellation’s grand crus, with vines bordering those of Château Margaux itself.
For three generations the estate’s founding family, the Grangerous, served as cellar masters at Château Margaux, and in 2009 the property passed to Xavier and Julie Gonet-Médeville, the couple behind acclaimed Champagne Gonet-Médeville and the legendary Sauternes estate Château Gilette. The heart of the estate is a parcel on the famous plateau du Moulin, a triangle bordered on two sides by Château Margaux’s vines. Farming is meticulous, with natural practices, low yields, and careful hand harvesting of roughly 40-year-old vines rooted in deep Margaux gravel, and the co-planted vineyard is roughly 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot.
The 2023 shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple color and an aromatic profile that is quintessential Margaux: cassis, blackberry, and black cherry layered with violet, rose petal, cedar, and gentle baking spice. Built on fruit and freshness with the backbone of a generous share of Cabernet Sauvignon, the palate is medium to full-bodied and silky, with fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, and a long, perfumed finish. The vintage’s fragrant, classically proportioned character suits the estate beautifully, offering early charm along with the structure to reward a decade or more in the cellar.
Rare, refined, and still flying under the radar, this is true Margaux terroir and grand cru craftsmanship at a fraction of the price of its famous neighbors.
