Barthod Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Graviers 2024

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod is one of Chambolle-Musigny's most celebrated estates, long revered for intense, ageworthy Pinot Noir. Founded by Marcel Noëllat in the 1920s and passed down through his daughter's marriage to Gaston Barthod, the domaine came fully into Ghislaine's hands after his death in 1999, though she had effectively been making the wine for a decade before that. She and partner Louis Boillot farm their roughly six hectares together, split largely across eight Chambolle-Musigny premier cru sites, though the two estates vinify and sell separately. In the mid-2010s, Ghislaine and Clément planted a small half-hectare parcel of Chardonnay in Chambolle, giving the storied red-wine house its first commercial white — the stony, gravel-soiled site known as Les Graviers.

The 2024 is pale gold in the glass, with a nose of smoke and flint layered over fresh lemon and custard apple. Aged for a year in a 50/50 split of used 500-liter oak barrels and terracotta jars, it shows virtually no detectable oak influence, arriving instead sleek, pure-fruited, and tangy, with a fresh, compact energy that clings satisfyingly on the finish.

A rare and precise white from a domaine built on red wine mastery, offering real Chambolle character at a relatively accessible entry point into the estate.

Pairs beautifully with: roast chicken or turkey, or a mushroom and béchamel tart.
