Stadlmann Gruner Veltliner 2024
A vibrant, savory white with a distinctly peppery edge, the Stadlmann Grüner Veltliner 2024 from Austria's Thermenregion shows why this small estate has become the region's standard-bearer for expressive, site-driven whites.
The Stadlmann family has tended vines in Traiskirchen, just twenty minutes south of Vienna, since 1780. Eighth-generation winemaker Bernhard Stadlmann, who holds three doctoral degrees, took over the estate with the 2006 vintage, dedicating himself to refining the traditions passed down through his family's long history. He farms 20 hectares across 35 parcels of certified organic vineyards on the east-facing slopes of the Anninger, where old vines root deeply into shell-limestone soils. In the cellar, Stadlmann takes a deliberately hands-off approach, giving each wine the time it needs to develop, resulting in wines celebrated for their precision, complexity, and unmistakable sense of place.
This vintage shows a pale straw-green color and an aromatic profile of gooseberry, green apple, white pepper, and chamomile, with the variety's signature savory, herbal edge. On the palate, it's medium-bodied and lively, with excellent density and mouthwatering acidity balancing its spicy, slightly bitter Grüner character. The finish is clean, dry, and lingering, with white pepper carrying through to the end.
It's a benchmark expression of Grüner Veltliner — precise, food-friendly, and a compelling introduction to a producer whose reputation rests on unwavering respect for terroir.
