Trevallon IGP Alpilles Rouge 2023
A deep, structured red that ranks among the most iconic wines of Southern France, the Domaine de Trévallon IGP Alpilles Rouge 2023 pairs Cabernet Sauvignon with Syrah in a way no appellation rule ever anticipated.
Éloi Dürrbach founded the estate in 1973 in Saint-Étienne-du-Grès, planting Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Syrah on the clay-limestone slopes of the Alpilles at a time when Cabernet was falling out of favor in Provence. When the INAO barred the variety from the Baux-de-Provence appellation, Dürrbach simply left it behind, choosing to bottle his wine as a humble vin de pays rather than change the blend, and in doing so built one of the region's most singular labels. The vineyard is farmed organically, harvested at full ripeness, and vinified in whole clusters before aging up to two years in large oak casks. Dürrbach's children, Ostiane and Antoine, now run the estate with the same uncompromising philosophy, and this vintage was crafted in close succession with their mother Floriane.
The 2023 is a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, pouring a deep, intense color and opening with a powerful nose of garrigue, black olive, and spice. Despite a famously dry growing season, the palate shows real finesse alongside its power, layering dark fruit, black truffle, and thyme over a taut, refined structure, with beautifully polished tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. Critics have singled it out for its aristocratic elegance and a touch of wildness that gives the wine extra dimension and soul.
A true collector's wine built to age for decades, it stands as one of the finest expressions yet from an estate that has spent fifty years proving the rules don't always make the best wine.
