Domaine Meix Foulot Mercurey Rouge 2020
A classic, terroir-true red Burgundy, the Domaine du Meix Foulot Mercurey Rouge 2020 comes from the Côte Chalonnaise's most historic and picturesque estate, offering an accessible entry point into one of Burgundy's most underrated appellations.
Domaine Meix Foulot has been in the hands of the de Launay family for multiple generations, its cellars and vines set high on a hill overlooking the whole of Mercurey. Paul de Launay expanded the estate's own bottling program in the 1960s, and his daughter Agnes has run the domaine solely since the mid-1990s, upholding an approach built on short-pruned vines, no herbicides, and minimal use of fertilizer. This village-level bottling draws from a blend of Mercurey terroirs totaling seven hectares, giving it a consistent, harmonious character year to year. The grapes are fully destemmed and fermented with native yeast, aging split between cuve and barrel before bottling roughly 16 to 18 months after harvest.
The 2020 shows a bright ruby color and an inviting nose of sweet cherries, raspberries, spice, flower petals, and a whisper of vine smoke. The palate is medium-bodied, with a pretty core of red fruit, fine-grained tannins, and notably tangy acidity that gives the wine a lively, bracing edge in its youth. It carries the estate's hallmark structure and freshness, with real potential to soften and deepen over the next several years.
It's the ideal introduction to Mercurey's rustic charm — honest, well-made, and a genuine expression of Côte Chalonnaise terroir at a fair price.
