Jean Foillard Corcelette 2024
Jean Foillard is one of Beaujolais' most revered names, part of the celebrated "Gang of Four" that Kermit Lynch championed in returning the region to its roots after decades of dominance by simple Beaujolais Nouveau. Based in Villié-Morgon, Foillard took over his father's estate in 1980 and became one of the first growers in the region to embrace organic, low-intervention farming, working old vines without synthetic inputs and relying on minimal or no added sulfur. The Corcelette cuvée comes from a high-elevation parcel bordering Chiroubles, planted with vines exceeding 80 years of age on sandy granite and decomposed schist soils — terroir that lends the wine its distinctive mineral energy and sets it apart even among Foillard's other celebrated bottlings.
The 2024 pours a bright, luminous ruby in the glass. The nose is delicate and floral, layering brambly red fruit with notes of wilted rose petal, incense, and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is fresh and vibrant, carrying gentle grip on the entry that resolves into a fine, slightly powdery structure and a focused, tea-leaf finish. Fermented with whole clusters using native yeasts and rested nine months in older oak, it shows the silky texture and sensuous, floral character that has long made Corcelette Foillard's most seductive Morgon.
Elegant rather than powerful, this is a vintage built for immediate charm with real aging potential, offering a refined, terroir-driven expression of Gamay at its most graceful.
