Le Marquis de Calon Segur 2019

Le Marquis de Calon Ségur 2019 is a red Bordeaux blend, the second wine of Saint-Estèphe's storied third-growth estate, offering a more immediately approachable window into one of the Médoc's most romantic terroirs.

Château Calon-Ségur takes its name from the medieval boats once used to ferry timber across the Garonne, with the "Ségur" added when the Marquis de Ségur acquired the property in the early eighteenth century through marriage. His declaration that he made wine at Lafite and Latour but that his heart remained at Calon gave the estate its famous heart-shaped label, a symbol it has carried since. The Capbern-Gasqueton family guided the property throughout the nineteenth century, and since 2012 it has been owned by Suravenir Assurances, which has continued to craft wines true to the appellation's pure, classic style. The 50-hectare vineyard sits on deep Garonne gravel over a fine seam of lacustrine clay, and the fruit for this cuvée is harvested entirely by hand, with rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and at the sorting table before fermentation in tapered stainless steel, thermo-regulated tanks.

In the glass, the 2019 shows a deep purple-black color, with fragrant notes of potpourri, garrigue and Darjeeling tea layered over redcurrant jelly, plum preserves and blackcurrant, lifted by a touch of cracked black pepper. The full-bodied palate reveals a firm, grainy tannic frame with bright freshness carrying crunchy black fruit through to a long, savory finish. Aged around 17 months in oak, roughly 30% new, the wine captures the structured, earthy backbone typical of Saint-Estèphe while retaining real generosity and polish.

It's a second wine with genuine ambition — velvety and expressive enough to enjoy on release, yet structured enough to reward a few years in the cellar.
