Terenzi Balbinus 2022
A rich, distinctive white built entirely from Vermentino, the Terenzi Balbinus 2022 is a passionate tribute to the grape, sourced from the estate's oldest selected parcels and aged in a mix of ceramic amphora and steel to give it a more serious, layered character than typical Vermentino.
Terenzi is a family-run estate in Scansano, in the heart of Tuscany's Maremma, founded in 2001 by siblings Federico, Balbino and Francesca Romana Terenzi — with the wine's name a nod to Balbino himself. Spanning 150 hectares, 60 of them under vine, the estate has become a defining voice in Maremma's modern wine renaissance, earning Gambero Rosso's "Emerging Winery" award in 2012 and building a reputation on wines that balance regional authenticity with real polish, including its acclaimed Madrechiesa Sangiovese, a repeat Tre Bicchieri winner.
Balbinus shows inviting aromas of sage and white peach, the result of fruit sourced from the estate's oldest Vermentino vines and a deliberate aging regime split between ceramic and steel that lends texture without masking the variety's natural freshness. On the palate it's tonic and succulent, with a long, saline, deeply satisfying finish that sets it apart from lighter, more straightforward Vermentino styles.
It's a wine that reframes what Vermentino can be — structured and age-worthy rather than simply easy-drinking, and a standout expression of Maremma's coastal, limestone-driven terroir.
